Frequently asked questions
Answers to the questions students and parents ask most. Can’t find yours? Get in touch.
Start taking classes
From what age can my child start lessons?
We accept students from the age of 6.
Can I have a trial lesson?
Yes, you can book a trial lesson so we can get to know each other. If you are a beginner, we will introduce you to the instrument; if you already play, you can show us your current level. A trial lesson is 30 minutes and costs half the normal 30-minute rate: € 16,75 for students under 21, or € 20,27 (incl. 21% BTW) for students aged 21 and over. If you decide to sign up for lessons, the trial lesson fee is deducted from your first invoice. If you decide not to, you will receive an invoice for the trial lesson. You don’t need your own instrument for the trial lesson. You can request one through our website, by email or by WhatsApp.
How do I sign up for lessons?
- Get in touch by email (info@adagiomusicstudio.com) or WhatsApp (+31-6-2651-7268).
- Book a trial lesson if you like, and agree a regular lesson time with us.
- Sign the Terms and Conditions and the Rates & Dates Schedule. For children, a parent or caregiver signs.
- Pay the first invoice within 14 days.
- Accept the Google Calendar invitation for your recurring lesson. It also gives you access to your documents.
Once the agreement is signed and the first payment is made, your lesson time is reserved.
When and where are lessons given?
Lessons are normally given once a week, Monday to Friday, in person at Het Couvéehuis, Frankenslag 139, 2582 HJ Den Haag. We agree the lesson time together, based on your (or your child’s) availability and ours.
In which languages are lessons taught?
Lessons are given in English, Dutch or Hungarian.
Geven jullie ook les in het Nederlands?
Ja. Onze docent heeft Hongaars als moedertaal, spreekt Engels op C1-niveau en Nederlands op een sterk B2-niveau. We geven graag viool- en pianoles in het Nederlands. Kamermuzieklessen zijn ook mogelijk in het Nederlands, maar omdat er misschien anderen zijn die (beter) Engels spreken, is dat meestal de voertaal van die lessen. Muziektheorie en gehoortraining (solfège) zijn alleen mogelijk in het Engels.
Can I take more than one lesson a week?
Yes. On request, you can take two lessons of the same type per week.
I don’t have a violin/piano. Can I still take lessons?
It is essential to have your own (rented) violin for the lessons and at-home practice. If you don’t own an instrument, you can rent one from various music shops. We are happy to advise you on renting or buying an instrument!
To follow piano lessons, it is essential that you have a(n electric) piano or a keyboard at home, because you will need to practise between lessons. We can advise you on buying an instrument if you wish!
What equipment and study material do I need?
You provide your own equipment. We’ll tell you what’s needed in good time; usually an instrument, study books, a music stand and a music manuscript book. Everyone needs to purchase their assigned books. You can order them through us or buy them yourself. We frequently give additional material during lessons, always free of charge.
Are you qualified to teach violin?
Yes, we are qualified to teach violin to students of all ages from 6 years old. Our teacher started playing the violin at the age of 9 and obtained the following degrees:
- 2018–2021 Royal Conservatory, The Hague – Bachelor of Baroque and Classical Violin, Early Music Department
- 2016–2018 Franz Liszt Academy of Music, Budapest, Hungary – Master of Music Education (Primary and Secondary Level) specialized in Violin, Diploma with Highest Honors
- 2014–2016 Franz Liszt Academy of Music, Budapest, Hungary – Master of Classical Musical Instrumental Performance specialized in Violin
- 2011–2014 Széchenyi István University, Győr, Hungary – Bachelor of Classical Musical Instrumental Performance specialized in Violin
Are you qualified to teach children?
Yes, we are qualified to teach children from the age of 6. Our teacher obtained a master’s degree in music education at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest in 2018, with Highest Honors.
Are you qualified to teach people with physical or mental disabilities?
Although we have no official qualification in special needs education, we have worked successfully for many years with students with a range of (learning) disabilities. Please tell us about any disabilities in detail, so we can decide whether we have enough experience to take on the student.
Do you teach other instruments than violin?
Yes. Besides violin, we teach piano up to level 5. Our teacher studied piano from the age of 12 to 22 and took 3 years of harpsichord lessons at the Early Music Department of the Royal Conservatory of The Hague.
We also teach solfège and chamber music to players of any instrument.
Prices and payment
How much do lessons cost?
Rates for 2026 are below. The rate is the same for in-person and online lessons.
| Lesson | Duration | Students under 21 (no BTW) | Students aged 21 and over (incl. 21% BTW) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Violin / Piano | 30 min | € 33,50 | € 40,53 |
| Violin / Piano | 45 min | € 47,50 | € 57,48 |
| Violin / Piano | 60 min | € 63,00 | € 76,23 |
| Chamber music / Solfège | 30 min | € 17,00 | € 20,57 |
Why do some students pay BTW?
Under Dutch law, lessons for students under 21 are exempt from BTW (Dutch VAT). From the day a student turns 21, 21% BTW is added to the rate.
Are there any discounts?
It is not possible to take lessons at a reduced rate, but two discounts apply:
- Quantity discount (5%): when one or more students from the same household take at least € 119,80 worth of lessons per week. For example, two 60-minute lessons per week for students under 21 (2 × € 63,00 = € 126,00) qualify.
- Young adult discount (10%): for young adults under 29 who have finished high school, on violin or piano lessons of 45 or 60 minutes. It does not apply to 30-minute instrument lessons, chamber music or solfège.
Can the rates go up?
Rates may increase at the start of each calendar year. We announce new rates at least one month in advance. If you don’t accept them, tell us in writing before they take effect; the agreement then ends on that date. If lessons continue, the new rates apply.
How does payment work?
You pay every two months, in advance. We send the invoice about two weeks before each payment period starts, and payment is due within 14 days of the invoice date. Payment periods for 2026/2027:
| Payment period | Notes |
|---|---|
| 31 August – 30 October 2026 | |
| 1 November – 31 December 2026 | |
| 1 January – 28 February 2027 | |
| 1 March – 30 April 2027 | |
| 1 May – 16 July 2027 | |
| 17 July – 30 August 2027 | Optional summer lessons, invoiced separately |
How do I pay?
By iDEAL or bank transfer to NL21 KNAB 0615 8297 32 (Adagio Music Studio). Always put the invoice number and the student’s name in the description, for example “1234-568 Name of Student”. Invoices are sent from billing@adagiomusicstudio.com; please save this address in your contacts so invoices don’t end up in spam.
What happens if I pay late?
If we haven’t received payment within 14 days of the invoice, lessons may be postponed or cancelled.
Absence, cancellation and holidays
I need to cancel a lesson (for example because I’m sick). What happens?
The same rules apply to any absence, and they depend on how much notice you give:
- More than 24 hours’ notice: we offer up to two alternative dates for a make-up lesson within 30 days.
- Less than 24 hours’ notice: the lesson is charged and we don’t have to offer a make-up lesson.
For anything short-notice, please call or WhatsApp us on +31-6-2651-7268.
I can’t come to my lesson. Can I have my money back?
No. Lessons you cancel are not refunded, even if you don’t want a make-up lesson. If neither offered make-up date suits you, the lesson lapses without refund or credit.
How long is a make-up lesson valid?
30 days from the date of the cancelled lesson. If that period runs into the summer holiday, the lesson can be made up then, but make-up lessons can’t move into the next school year. A make-up lesson may need to take place online.
My lesson was cancelled by the teacher. What now?
We’ll agree one of these options with you:
- a make-up lesson at a time that suits us both;
- a deduction from your next invoice; or
- a refund of the cancelled lesson.
My lesson was rescheduled to an online lesson, but I don’t want to participate in an online lesson. What now?
If an in-person lesson can’t take place, it moves online at the same price. If you choose not to attend the online lesson, it counts as a missed lesson and the normal cancellation policy applies.
Do you send a substitute when you cannot teach?
Only if we can’t teach for a longer period of time. In that case we may arrange for a colleague to substitute. We very rarely cancel lessons: for a single cancelled lesson, we agree a make-up lesson, a deduction from your next invoice or a refund with you. When we can’t teach in person due to illness, lessons take place online and the normal cancellation policy applies.
How do I keep track of cancellations and make-up lessons?
After the first cancellation (by either side), we share a Google Sheet with you, also linked in your Google Calendar lesson appointment. It’s our official record: it shows each cancellation, whether it qualifies for a make-up lesson, the agreed make-up date, and any credit or refund we owe you. Make-up lessons are scheduled oldest cancellation first, whoever cancelled.
Are there lessons during school breaks?
No regular lessons are given during Dutch national school holidays. Sometimes extra lessons are possible during holidays; we’ll let you know in good time, and these are invoiced separately. If you (or your child) attend a school with different holiday dates, those are taken into account too. Holidays in 2026/2027:
| Holiday | Dates |
|---|---|
| Autumn break (Herfstvakantie) | 17 – 25 October 2026 |
| Winter break (Kerstvakantie) | 19 December 2026 – 3 January 2027 |
| February break (Voorjaarsvakantie) | 20 – 28 February 2027 |
| Easter (Paasdagen) | 26 – 29 March 2027 |
| May break (Meivakantie) | 24 April – 9 May 2027 |
| Ascension Day (Hemelvaartsdag) | 6 – 9 May 2027 |
| Whit Monday (2e Pinksterdag) | 17 May 2027 |
| Summer break (Zomervakantie) | 17 July – 29 August 2027 |
What about study days or teacher conference days at school?
These are not holidays. Lessons go ahead as usual and the normal cancellation policy applies. Any absence outside the official holidays counts as a cancellation.
I want to take a break from my lessons. Can I resume lessons later?
It’s not possible to pause lessons during the school year and keep your lesson time. Your place is reserved on the basis of continuous enrolment, so a new lesson package must be bought for every payment period. If a package isn’t bought, we may treat the enrolment as ended and offer the time to another student. You can stop lessons with 30 days’ notice (see below) and resume later only if there is space.
Location
Can I take online lessons exclusively?
Violin and piano lessons are available online, but only on occasion. Chamber music lessons are not available online. Music theory and ear training (solfège) classes can be followed fully online, but in-person attendance is highly encouraged.
Can I have lessons at my home?
No, lessons are exclusively available in Het Couvéehuis.
Accompanying your children to classes
As a parent, can I sit in during my child’s lessons?
No. From experience, it is best not to sit in during your child’s lessons. It’s important that children have undivided attention, and that they come to trust the teacher and accept them as the adult in charge in the room. When a parent is present, children see the parent as the only authority and often behave differently, usually less freely than when they are alone with the teacher. They tend to direct their questions to the parent, or answer them instead of the teacher. For our youngest students (6 years old), parents can sit in for the first couple of weeks if the child finds it hard to let go. Most importantly, when children see that their parents are comfortable leaving them with us, it reassures them that they are safe, and they settle in much more easily.
Is there a waiting room where you teach?
Yes, in Het Couvéehuis you can wait in the common area or in the garden where you can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and make use of the free WiFi connection. Moreover, the location is just a street away from the Frederik Hendriklaan, a lovely shopping street with all kinds of cafés and shops.
Can my child come alone to the lessons?
It is entirely up to you, but in that case, we would like to have the student’s phone number to avoid any issues.
Can someone else other than me take my child to the lessons?
It is entirely up to you, but in that case, we would like to have the phone number of the person responsible to avoid any issues.
Who takes the lessons
Can my children take violin or piano lessons at the same time?
No, it is not possible to take group lessons, even for siblings. We put great emphasis on personalized study progress, and we always want to give our undivided attention to every student. Everyone is different and has different abilities and needs, so we find it crucial that lessons are individual.
Can my child take violin or piano lessons with a friend?
No, it is not possible to take group lessons, even with friends. We put great emphasis on personalized study progress, and we always want to give our undivided attention to every student. Everyone is different and has different abilities and needs, so we find it crucial that lessons are individual.
The journey of the apprentice musician
I would like to know about the progress of my child. Are you available to give feedback?
Yes, you can ask for a feedback meeting at any time. We also offer everyone individual feedback sessions at mid-term and at the end of term. We highly encourage you to join these meetings so we can discuss your child’s progress and any other questions. It’s also important for us to hear your opinion!
What if I don’t practise?
Preparing for lessons matters. If a student keeps coming unprepared, we may, after reasonable written notice, end the agreement and offer the place to someone on the waiting list.
Are there any exams at Adagio Music Studio?
No, there are no exams and grades given at Adagio. Instead, there are two student recitals each year (see below).
Are there student recitals to play at?
Yes, two student recitals each school year: the Winter Recital on Saturday 13 February 2027 and the Summer Recital on Saturday 26 June 2027. Dates may change if necessary; we’ll let you know in good time. Every student of school age must take part in at least one of the two recitals. For adult students it’s optional, but highly recommended.
Can you prepare a student for music exams, such as ABRSM, Trinity, etc?
Yes, we have experience in preparing students for violin, piano, and music theory and ear training exams.
